The Committee on European Affairs meets regularly in order to give a negotiating mandate to the Ministers of the Government before each meeting of the Council of the European Union.
After receiving the conclusions of the standing committees of the Seimas, the Committee on European Affairs and the Committee on Foreign Affairs summarise them at a joint meeting and communicate them to the Government. An institution responsible for the formulation of Lithuania’s position on highly relevant and relevant EU legislative proposals develops the position and submits it to the Seimas. The Committee on European Affairs and the Committee on Foreign Affairs consider the position and present the opinion of the Seimas to the Government taking into account the conclusions of the standing committees. The Committee on European Affairs and the Committee on Foreign Affairs may, where appropriate, express a parliamentary reservation, which means that a Government representative cannot present Lithuania’s position at the Council of the EU as long as it is not coordinated with the Seimas.
Government reports following the meetings of the Council of the EU
After each meeting of the European Council and the Council of the EU, the Prime Minister, the Minister and other representatives of the Government present a report to the Committee on European Affairs and the Committee on Foreign Affairs concerning the issues addressed at the meeting and Lithuania’s positions on these issues.
