Seimas called for celebrating the Year of Tadeusz Kościuszko in Lithuania and the world

Press release, 25 April 2017

Noting that this year sees the 200th anniversary of the death of General Tadeusz Kościuszko, leader of the 1794 uprising of the Kingdom of Poland and the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and participant of the United States War of Independence, the Seimas called on Lithuania’s state and municipal institutions, non-governmental organisations, residents and Lithuanian communities abroad to commemorate the Year of Tadeusz Kościuszko in Lithuania and worldwide, and to promote the legacy of the values fostered by this outstanding historical personality.

For that purpose, the Seimas adopted a resolution in view of the fact that the Year of Tadeusz Kościuszko was included in the list of anniversaries celebrated by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in 2016–2017. The resolution highlights the significance of the lifetime achievements and historical legacy of Tadeusz Kościuszko in promoting the ideas of freedom and independence of Lithuania, Poland and the United States of America.

The resolutions calls the attention of the Sejm of the Republic of Poland and the Congress of the United States of America to the fact that the historical legacy of Tadeusz Kościuszko and the values he stood up for, namely the fight for freedom and independence, are of universal significance, bringing together our states and societies and strengthening the transatlantic links.
