Born on 15 May 1948 in Astrakhan (Russia) into a middle class family.

In 1966 finished secondary school in Kaunas.

In 1996-1972 studied at Kaunas Institute of Medicine (currently - University of Medicine), acquired the qualification of a biophysicist.

In 1971 - a technician at the Lithuanian Branch of the All-Union Research Institute of Butter and Cheese Production. Later - an physicist-engineer, junior research worker

In 1977-1980 - a post graduate student at the Institute of Physics of Biology in Puschino. Candidate of biological sciences (currently PhD).

In 1983 - Head of the Laboratory of Physical and Chemical Research at Kaunas Institute of Medicine.

In 1986 - senior lecturer at the Department of Biological and Bio-organic Chemistry. Has published over 50 scientific publications.

In 1990-1992 - Deputy of the Supreme Council - the Reconstituent Seimas, a member of the Commission on Citizens' Rights and Nationalities Affairs (1990-1991); its Deputy Chairman (1991-1993).

Member of the Seimas since 1992.

In 1992-1996 - Deputy head of the Lithuanian Delegation to the North Atlantic Assembly. A member of the Delegation for the negotiations with Russia on the withdrawal of Soviet troops from the territory of Lithuania.

Member of the Homeland Union (Lithuanian Conservatives) since 1993.

Speaks English, Russian and Polish.

Wife Liudmila is an engineer. The family has daughter Olga and Son Pavel.
