In 1989 elected Deputy of the USSR in Šilutė electoral district.
In 1990 became Deputy of the Supreme Council of the Republic of Lithuania - the Reconstituent Seimas.
In 1992-1996 - Deputy Chairman of the Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania.
Member of the Lithuanian Reform Movement Sąjūdis in 1988.
Was a member of the CPSU till 1989. Currently - a member of the Lithuanian Centre Union, its First Vice Chairman.
Speaks English and Russian.
Wife Jūratė works at the Lithuanian National Martynas Mažvydas Library.
Deputy Chairman of the Seimas Delegation to the Baltic Assembly, a member of the Presidium of the Baltic Assembly.
Member of the Seimas Delegation to the Interparliamentary Union.
Member of the Interparliamentary Relations Group with the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
