Finished Kaunas Aušros secondary school in 1978. Graduated form Kaunas Institute of Medicine in 1986. A physician.

In 1980-1986, a junior research worker at the Laboratory of Psychology and Sociology at Kaunas Research Institute of Physiology and Pathology of Systems of Heart and Blood-vessels named after Z. Januškevičius. In 1986-1987, a head physician at Viešintai Out-Patient Department, in 1988-1989, a physician at Kaunas Central Hospital. In 1988 was one of the organisers of the Lithuanian reform Movement "Sąjūdis", a member of the Sąjūdis Seimas. Established the Lithuanian Organisation of Political Prisoners and Deportees in the same year, was its Chairman. Organised and participated in the expedition to the places of deportation in Siberia.

In 1990-1992 - a deputy of the Supreme Council - the Reconstitutive Seimas. From April, 1990 - Director General of the Department of National Defence, from 10 October 1991 - Minister of National Defence,

Took a course in professional development in Cambridge and London. On 28 July, 1995, established a non-profit organisation - the Strategic Development Centre. Elected member of the Swedish Royal Military Academy in 1996.

Does not belong to any party.

Speaks English and Russian languages.

Wife Vilija graduated from the Lithuanian State Conservatoire. Has a son Vytenis and daughter Aušrinė.

Member of the Seimas Delegation to the Interparliamentary Union.

Member of the Seimas Delegation to North Atlantic Assembly.

Member of the Seimas Group for the Relations with Taiwan.

On 19 August, 1997, the Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania (following part two of Article 62 of the Constitution of the Republic of Lithuania, taking into account the Recommendation of the Prosecutor General of the Republic of Lithuania of 14 August 1997 concerning the approval of the Seimas to bring an action against member of the Seimas Audrius Butkevičius and the Recommendation of the Seimas Temporary Investigation Commission of 18 August, 1997) agreed that a criminal action should be brought against member of the Seimas Audrius Butkevičius charging him with bribery. On 28 October, 1997 the Seimas agreed to subject member of the Seimas Audrius Butkevičius to a pre-trial detention - arrest.
