In 1966 graduated from the Department of Nature of Vilnius University. In 1967 worked at Kaunas Institute of Power engineering. Doctor of Geographic Sciences.
In 1992, as a representative of the Sąjūdis coalition, was elected to the Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania in Šilainiai single-mandate electoral district of the city of Kaunas. Worked at the Seimas nature Protection Committee. Went on study visits to Canada to develop his knowledge in the field of nature protection. A member of the Board of the Interparliamentary Nature Protection GLOBE Organisation since 1994, a representative of the Baltic States at the European Parliament.
In 1990-1992 - secretary of the Sąjūdis Council of the city of Kaunas. Deputy Chairman of the Lithuanian Sąjūdis Seimas.
A member of the Homeland Union (Lithuanian Conservatives) since 1993.
Speaks English, Polish and Russian.
Married. Wife Genovaitė is an artist. The family has a daughter who is a lawyer.
