Office of the Seimas will mark its Centenary and recall the most significant moments

Press release, 9 June 2020

A hundred years ago, on 7 July 1920, the Constituent Seimas employed its first employees. On 7 July 2020, in order to commemorate this anniversary, the Office of the Seimas will symbolically celebrate the Centenary of the institution’s activities by recalling the most significant moments in its history. On this occasion, a new brochure on the Office of the Seimas will be presented.

‘The Office of the Seimas began functioning in parallel with the Constituent Seimas. The staff of the Office at all times facilitated the implementation of the functions of the Seimas laid down in the Constitution and assisted  Members of the Seimas in representing the interests of the State and the nation,’ says Arvydas Nekrošius, Deputy Speaker of the Seimas.

An official celebration of the Centenary of the Office of the Seimas will take place in the Grand courtyard of the Seimas. ‘The programme of the event will include a presentation of a book on the Office of the Seimas prepared for publication by the Public Relations Unit of the Communication Department. The publication is important because it represents the first-ever effort to systematise the information on the work of the Office of the Seimas. The staff members will also be invited to sign in the historic memory capsule, which will be solemnly buried in the Seimas courtyard on 7 July 2020 for future retrieval,’ says Marius Žiūkas, Head of the Finance Unit and Acting Secretary General of the Office of the Seimas.

The Constituent Seimas, elected by the nation in the first universal democratic election, convened for its first sitting on 15 May 1920. The Office of the Seimas, officially named the Office in the past, began functioning at the same time. For the first two weeks, four officials worked in the Office. They consisted of two minutes writers and two bailiffs. The full staff structure was established within two subsequent months and 7 July 1920 saw the approval of the first manning list of the Office.

Former employees of the Office of the Seimas included professionals renowned in a variety of areas including but not limited to the legal profession, literature, sports, theatre, and communications. All of them contributed immensely to the creation of the wellbeing of the state in pre-war Lithuania and were instrumental in drafting the documents proclaiming the statehood of Lithuania as well as in establishing the diplomatic relations after the country regained its independence.

As a body serving the legislative branch of power, the Office of the Seimas is a community of responsible professionals in charge of conducting the day-to-day activities and tasks to ensure the continuity of the legislative process, dissemination of information on the work of the Seimas, international cooperation and other, often invisible but very important tasks.
