Chairpersons of the Foreign Affairs Committees of the Baltic Parliaments on a mission in Georgia

Press release, 19 October 2022

Laima Liucija Andrikienė, Chair of the Committee on Foreign Affairs of the Lithuanian Seimas, Marko Mihkelson, Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Estonian Riigikogu, and Rihards Kols, Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Latvian Saeima, have embarked on a two-day visit to Tbilisi, Georgia, where they will meet with the Chairman of the Parliament of Georgia and members of the Foreign Relations Committee, the Defence and Security Committee and the Committee on European Integration.

The agenda of the visit also includes meetings with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Georgia, and members of the Delegation of the European Union to Georgia, the European Union Monitoring Mission in Georgia, and non-governmental organisations.

The Chairpersons of the Foreign Affairs Committees of the Baltic Parliaments support Georgia in its efforts to ensure its territorial integrity and achieve its European and Euro-Atlantic integration goals.

‘The aim of our visit is to express our support for Georgia’s people in their pursuit of integration into NATO and the European Union,’ said Dr Andrikienė. ‘We unconditionally support Georgia’s territorial integrity and wholeness, condemn any initiatives to hold fake referendums in the illegally occupied regions of Abkhazia and Tskhinvali on changing their status and demand the withdrawal of the armed forces of the Russian Federation from the occupied territories of Georgia,’ Laima Andrikienė added.

In commemoration of the 14th anniversary of the annexation of a part of the territory of Georgia by the Russian Federation, the Seimas Committee on Foreign Affairs adopted a statement where it expressed its firm support to the integrity of Georgia’s state territory, as defined in the Constitution of Georgia, and the inviolability of its internationally recognised borders.
