Public display of tobacco products will be prohibited at points of sale from 2025

Press release, 24 November 2022

The Seimas adopted amendments to the Law on Control of Tobacco, Tobacco Products and Related Products (draft No XIIIP-3603(3), thus setting out special requirements for marketing of tobacco products at retail outlets from 2025.

The adopted amendments will prohibit the public display of tobacco products, related products and equipment at retail outlets.

The prohibition will not apply to tobacco product shops, tobacco product sections (provided these products are not on display in the show-windows of these shops or sections), international seaports and airports, and shopping outlets at the Lithuanian border crossing points with third countries, where goods are sold only to passengers departing from the Republic of Lithuania, as well as to shopping outlets on ships, aircraft and trains carrying passengers on international routes.

Under the procedure laid down by an institution authorised by the Government, retail outlets will be allowed to present only the following information on tobacco products and related products:

1) Names of manufacturers, names of tobacco products and related products, and titles of equipment for consuming these products;

2) The words ‘For sale’ or ‘On sale’;

3) Prices per unit packet or package comprising several unit packets of tobacco products and related products, and prices of equipment for consuming these products.

The amendments were adopted by 44 votes in favour to 13 against and 17 abstentions.
