Radvilė Morkūnaitė-Mikulėnienė, Deputy Speaker of the Seimas and Chair of the Committee on European Affairs, calls for more effective assistance to Ukraine on its road to the European Union

Press release, 2 February 2023

On Thursday, 2 February 2023, Radvilė Morkūnaitė-Mikulėnienė, Deputy Speaker of the Seimas and Chair of the Committee on European Affairs, sent a letter to Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, expressing her solidarity with Ukraine and its people and calling for more effective transposition of the EU acquis communautaire and, notably, adaptation of the national legislation of candidate countries, including Ukraine, in line with the provisions of the EU acquis.

‘Early adaptation of Ukraine’s national legislation to the EU priorities would contribute to speedier, more effective and more transparent progress of Ukraine on its way to the European Union. Lithuania and its authorities, including the Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania, are making every effort to help candidate countries achieve the goal of EU membership as quickly and effectively as possible. We want Ukraine to progress from a candidate country to a Member State of the European Union and a valuable part of the European Community as soon as possible,’ said Ms Morkūnaitė-Mikulėnienė as she emphasised Lithuania’s strong support for Ukraine on its European path.

In her letter, Ms Morkūnaitė-Mikulėnienė invited the European Commission to consider either facilitating technical access for candidate countries, particularly Ukraine, to the most relevant initiatives of the European Commission for the current year or initiating additional measures for the candidate countries to be informed about the latest EU legislation. That would enable candidate countries to follow up on the most relevant EU legislative documents for the given year and strategically align their political regulatory framework with the European initiatives through domestic instruments.

The projects of EU draft legislative acts and other EU documents are forwarded directly to national Parliaments of the EU Member States in accordance with Article 12 of the Treaty of Lisbon, amending the Treaty on European Union and the Treaty establishing the European Community, and the Protocol (No 1) on the role of national Parliaments in the European Union.
