Speaker of the Seimas congratulates Estonia on Independence Day
Press release, 24 February 2023
On behalf of the Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania and on her own behalf, Viktorija Čmilytė-Nielsen, Speaker of the Seimas, congratulated Jüri Ratas, President of the Riigikogu, and members of the Estonian Parliament on Independence Day.
‘Adopted 105 years ago, the Estonian Declaration of Independence enshrined the fundamental values of independence and democracy. As we celebrate the outstanding anniversary this year, we are unfortunately thinking about the undermined democratic values, the breach of the principles of international law and the violation of human rights and freedoms in the brutal war and atrocities perpetrated by Russia in Ukraine.
Therefore, on the occasion of Independence Day, I would like to wish you unity, wisdom and courage in your decision-making in order to ensure that the values enshrined in the Estonian Declaration of Independence will be further upheld and defended at both national and international level,’ reads the letter of congratulations by Ms Čmilytė-Nielsen.
