Viktorija Čmilytė-Nielsen, Speaker of the Seimas, began her official working visit to Oslo, Kingdom of Norway, on Monday. On Tuesday, the first meeting was her audience with King Harald V.

‘Today I have had a good opportunity to tell King Harald V that Norway is an important, close and reliable partner of Lithuania. For many years already, we have been developing excellent bilateral relations, and Lithuanian enterprises have been successfully operating in Norway. Moreover, Scandinavia is our priority market for export, innovation and foreign direct investment,’ said Ms Čmilytė-Nielsen.

According to the Speaker of the Seimas, close relations with Norway are also important because it is home to nearly 50,000-strong Lithuanian diaspora, which is one of the largest Lithuanian communities abroad.

‘Lithuanians of the world significantly contribute to the development of bilateral relations and multiculturalism. Yesterday when I met with the Lithuanians living in Oslo, I saw that Lithuanian identity could be fostered and close relations with the state of Lithuania could be maintained irrespective of the place of residence,’ said Ms Čmilytė-Nielsen.

The Speaker of the Seimas will later meet Masud Gharahkhani, President of the Storting (Parliament) of the Kingdom of Norway.
