Speaker of the Seimas: ‘We have come together to highlight issues on the agenda of the NATO Summit that are crucial for our region’
Press release, 9 July 2024
Yesterday, Viktorija Čmilytė-Nielsen, Speaker of the Seimas, attended a reception in Washington, D.C., hosted by Mike Johnson, Speaker of US House of Representatives, for the Speakers of Parliaments of NATO countries ahead of the NATO Summit.
In addition, a meeting with Members of the US Congress and other invited guests was organised by the US NGO JBANC (Joint Baltic American National Committee) uniting the Baltic States. The leaders of the Parliaments of Poland, Ukraine and the Nordic countries were also invited to this meeting, the purpose of which, according to the Speaker of the Seimas, was ‘to highlight the issues on the agenda of the NATO Summit that are crucial for our region.’
‘The brutal Russian attack on children’s hospital in Kyiv just before the NATO Summit has once again demonstrated the need for making every effort to ensure the security of Ukraine’s airspace. In this context, the parliamentary leaders of NATO countries cannot afford to remain on the sidelines. We need to show leadership. Therefore, I am delighted that the initiative I started in Vilnius to bring together leaders of parliaments prior to the NATO Summit has been continued in Washington,’ Ms Čmilytė-Nielsen said.
