Speaker of the Seimas Saulius Skvernelis speaks with heads of parliaments of the Baltic States

Daiga Mieriņa, Speaker of the Saeima of Latvia, and Lauri Hussar, Speaker of the Riigikogu of Estonia, congratulated Saulius Skvernelis on his election as Speaker of the Seimas. 

In his conversation with the Baltic leaders, Mr Skvernelis assured that Lithuania’s foreign policy remains consistent and relations with its neighbours and, in a broader context, with the Baltic States and the Nordic-Baltic Eight (NB8) remain a priority. The Speaker of the Seimas, referring to challenges emerging in the field of security, stressed the role of parliaments and cooperation with the Baltic and Nordic countries, which allows us to speak with one voice that is better heard in Europe and the world. 

‘We must further our aims and strengthen Baltic cooperation and parliamentary diplomacy, speak with one voice to ensure the security of the Baltic region and of Ukraine. Yet, we must not limit ourselves to talk and must be active in putting forward initiatives and taking the necessary decisions,’ said Mr Skvernelis, who has accepted the invitation to visit Latvia and Estonia.

The Head of the Lithuanian Parliament also stressed the importance of cooperation both in working towards Ukraine’s victory and in reconstructing Ukraine.
