Speaker of the Seimas met with the Ambassador of India
Press release, 16 December 2024
On 16 December 2024, Saulius Skvernelis, Speaker of the Seimas, met with Devesh Uttam, Ambassador of India to the Republic of Lithuania. India opened its embassy in Vilnius in March 2023, making Devesh Uttam the first Ambassador of India to reside in Lithuania.
Devesh Uttam conveyed the congratulations from the Speaker of the Parliament of India to Saulius Skvernelis upon his election as Speaker of the Seimas and expressed gratitude for the establishment of the Group for Inter-Parliamentary Relations with India in the Lithuanian Parliament.
The meeting discussed opportunities to develop friendly relations and cooperation between the two countries in the areas of trade, high-tech, and tourism.
‘Cooperation between our parliaments is key to strengthening the ties between our countries. I commend the steady growth in bilateral trade between our nations since 2010, but there is much untapped potential, particularly in high-tech engineering, biotechnology, life sciences, and other innovative sectors of economy,’ Mr Skvernelis said. He highlighted his commitment to ensuring that the inter-parliamentary collaboration between the two nations is carried out at the highest level.
Plans are underway to declare 2025 the Year of People-to-People Contacts between India and Lithuania. To expand the cultural relations, the Institute of Asian and Transcultural Studies was established at Vilnius University in 2023, and the Asian Centre is operating at Mykolas Romeris University. The activities of these centres and the projects they carry out promote mutual understanding, as well as intellectual, cultural, and people-to-people exchanges between India and Lithuania.
