Speaker of the Seimas congratulates the newly elected Speaker of the Icelandic Parliament

Saulius Skvernelis, Speaker of the Seimas, congratulated Thorunn Sveinbjarnardottir, the newly elected Speaker of the Althingi, and extended to her the wishes for constructive and meaningful endeavours on assuming her responsible duties.

‘Iceland and Lithuania share a remarkable bond, for Iceland holds a special place in the heart of every Lithuanian, as it was the first country to recognise the restoration of independence of the Republic of Lithuania. The Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania stands ready to continue the close parliamentary cooperation between Iceland and Lithuania both by strengthening bilateral ties and by jointly campaigning for democratic values and human rights on the international arena,’ the Speaker of the Seimas wrote in his letter of congratulations simultaneously inviting Ms Sveinbjarnardottir to attend the solemn commemoration of the 35th Anniversary of the Restoration of Lithuania’s Independence.
