Saulius Skvernelis, Speaker of the Seimas, meets with Italian Ambassador

Saulius Skvernelis, Speaker of the Seimas, has met with Emanuele de Maigret, Ambassador of Italy.

During the meeting, the Speaker of the Seimas thanked the Ambassador for the NATO Air Policing mission, which is currently being conducted by the Italian forces in Šiauliai, and discussed further defence and security cooperation between the two countries. 

‘Europe must remain united and step up its role in supporting Ukraine. I am glad that our countries share a common vision for the reconstruction of Ukraine and for the long-term military and political assistance. We need to seek solutions within the EU to ensure security in the entire region and Italy’s leadership is therefore crucial in shaping the political direction of Europe as a whole,’ Mr Skvernelis said during the meeting.

The Speaker of the Seimas and the Italian Ambassador also discussed the potential of building up the bilateral cooperation in the areas of information and communication technologies and life sciences. A particular emphasis was also made on Lithuania’s position on fighting irregular migration, on the need to strengthen Europe’s role in NATO, and on other matters on the EU agenda.
