Speaker of the Seimas: ‘We value Germany’s contribution to defence and security in our region’

Press release, 21 January 2021

On Thursday, 21 January 2021, Viktorija Čmilytė-Nielsen, Speaker of the Seimas, met remotely with Matthias Sonn, Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to Lithuania. The partnership between the two Member States of the European Union (EU) and NATO was discussed during the meeting. The COVID-19 pandemic, human rights violations in neighbouring countries of the EU and other global challenges were also brought into focus.

‘This year we mark the 30th anniversary of the recognition of the restoration of Lithuania’s independence and resumption of the diplomatic relations. I am pleased to see the successful and continuing parliamentary cooperation between Germany and Lithuania. Germany is an important partner of our country, whose contribution in the area of defence and security in our region is particularly significant. We also appreciate the efforts of the German Presidency to coordinate the EU response to COVID-19. The EU Member States must be united and do their utmost to overcome the pandemic,’ said the Speaker of the Seimas.
