Speaker of the Seimas: ‘We talk to Ukraine on a daily basis’

Press release, 18 January 2022

Today, Viktorija Čmilytė-Nielsen, Speaker of the Seimas, participated in a remote meeting with Tomasz Grodzki, Marshal of the Polish Senate, and Ruslan Stefanchuk, Speaker of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine. The parliamentary Speakers of the Lublin Triangle discussed regional security issues and coordinated joint action in the event of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

‘Lithuania’s support for Ukraine is unquestionable. We have already taken many diplomatic, political and practical steps to support Ukraine in all legally permissible forms, including military assistance, military training, joint exercises, as well as treatment and rehabilitation of wounded soldiers. Last week, we sent Stinger anti-aircraft missile systems to Ukraine, which was yet another consignment to the Ukrainian Armed Forces. This week, a delegation from the Seimas travelled to Kiev to express our solidarity.

Lithuania and I personally, in my capacity as Speaker of the Seimas, seek for a principled stance and coordinated action by the international community as well as close and constant contact in both multilateral and bilateral formats,’ Ms Čmilytė-Nielsen said.
