Speaker of the Seimas congratulates the United States on Independence Day

Press release, 4 July 2022

On behalf of the Seimas and on her own behalf, Viktorija Čmilytė-Nielsen, Speaker of the Seimas, congratulated Nancy Pelosi, Speaker of the US Congress; Kamala Harris, US Vice-President and President of the US Senate; and the people of the country on Independence Day.

Wishing them every success, unity and peace, the Speaker of the Seimas noted that the threat of the war being waged in Europe was felt on both sides of the Atlantic and thanked the United States for its leadership and assistance constantly provided to Ukraine which is fighting for the values of the entire democratic world.

Concurrently, Ms Čmilytė-Nielsen recalled that 28 July 2022 would mark the centenary of diplomatic relations between Lithuania and the United States.

‘Although historical and cultural ties have existed between our countries for over a century, the diplomatic relations established between Lithuania and the United States in 1922 legitimised the strong ties between our countries. I welcome the successful and comprehensive bilateral cooperation between Lithuania and the United States. Common democratic values mean that we have a shared view on political matters, in particular, on defence, energy and many other issues on the international agenda. Lithuania highly values the principled stance of the United States in enhancing security in our region and is grateful for the presence of the US troops on our soil. Apart from being an expression of solidarity and friendship, this presence also provides the most important foundations for boosting Lithuania’s national security,’ the congratulatory letter by Ms Čmilytė-Nielsen reads.
