Speaker of the Seimas: ‘Democratic world will manage to defeat occupation plans’
Press release, 23 August 2022
Today, Viktorija Čmilytė-Nielsen, Speaker of the Seimas, has extended an invitation to honour the victims of Stalinism and Nazism and to remember the Baltic Way.
‘On 23 August 1939, the two dictators signed secret protocols on dividing the Central and Eastern Europe and shook hands. Fifty years later on the day, residents of Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia expressed unanimous protest against the secret deal and began freeing themselves from the suppressive regime. Hand in hand, they stood in live chain of some 650 kilometres across the three Baltic States. We managed to restore our statehood and become an integral part of Europe and NATO. I am convinced that now, when the democratic world lends Ukraine a helping hand, we will manage to defeat occupation plans,’ Viktorija Čmilytė-Nielsen said.
