Press release, 12 September 2022
Viktorija Čmilytė-Nielsen, Speaker of the Seimas, wrote letters of condolences to the Rt. Hon. Lord McFall, Speaker of the House of Lords, and the Rt. Hon. Sir Lindsay Hoyle, Speaker of the House of Commons of the United Kingdom.
On behalf of the Seimas, Ms Čmilytė-Nielsen expressed her heartfelt condolences to the Parliament and the people of the United Kingdom, noting that this was also a time of mourning for the entire world.
‘We are deeply moved by sad news of the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Even though Her Majesty was the Queen of the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth, for the rest of the world she was one of the most prominent personalities of the past seven decades, a period spanning a lifetime for many. Throughout this epoch, she was the foundation of the stability of the United Kingdom, a symbol of devotion to duty and service to her country, and an epochal icon of timeless wisdom and dignity combined,’ Čmilytė-Nielsen wrote in her letter of condolences.
In addition, the Speaker of the Seimas wrote that Her Majesty’s state visit to Lithuania in 2006 would remain a memorable milestone in the history of bilateral relations between Lithuania and the United Kingdom.
