At her meeting with Petro Beshta, Ambassador of Ukraine to Lithuania, Viktorija Čmilytė-Nielsen, Speaker of the Seimas, noted that the decisions of the State Duma of the Russian Federation on annexing the territories of Ukraine would never be recognised. Pseudo-referendums will never get recognition either.

‘The regions of Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson and Zaporizhzhia have belonged and will belong to Ukraine. The steps taken by the Russian Federation constitute a gross breach of all international agreements and international law, the Charter of the United Nations, and the Constitution of Ukraine,’ stressed the Speaker of the Seimas. ‘Lithuania has supported and will continue supporting the territorial integrity and inviolability of Ukraine within its constitutionally established and internationally recognised borders.’

The Speaker of the Seimas recalled that Lithuania’s stance on the matter was set out in the Resolution on non-recognition of illegal referendums organised by the Russian Federation in Ukraine, as adopted by the Seimas on 15 September 2022.

At the meeting, Ms Čmilytė-Nielsen also expressed steadfast support to Ukraine’s aspiration for NATO membership. ‘No desperate moves or threats by Russia will change the decisions of the European Union and NATO. No decrees or decisions by Vladimir Putin or the Duma controlled by him will prevent us from seeking the earliest possible integration of Ukraine into the EU and NATO,’ said the Speaker of the Seimas.
