Speaker of the Seimas: ‘Parliamentary cooperation within the Lublin Triangle could accelerate Ukraine’s EU and NATO integration’

Viktorija Čmilytė-Nielsen, Speaker of the Seimas, attended a meeting of the Presidium of the Assembly of the Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania, the Sejm and Senate of the Republic of Poland and the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine. The meeting opened the 12th session of the tripartite Assembly.

‘The Assembly has convened at a particularly critical time, nine months into the brutal war against Ukraine. In this context, I see parliamentary cooperation within the Lublin Triangle as a useful and meaningful tool. We need to consider the ways and means to make the Assembly even more efficient and effective. In addition, agreement is needed on the final document of the session to be adopted tomorrow,’ Ms Čmilytė-Nielsen said while opening the meeting of the tripartite Assembly.

The Speaker of the Seimas is convinced that the joint statement of the Assembly should specify the main tasks and objectives of the Lublin Triangle, including the overarching commitment to cooperate closely in bilateral and multilateral formats in order to ensure the swiftest possible EU and NATO integration of Ukraine.

‘Ambitious as it may seem, this is the only possible solution for ensuring long-term stability, security and prosperity for both Ukraine and the entire region,’ Ms Čmilytė-Nielsen pointed out.

According to the Speaker of the Seimas, it is currently impossible to imagine the prospect of freedom and democracy in the region without the role of the United States. Therefore, on Tuesday, 6 December 2022, the Presidium had a remote conversation with Robert Kelly Menendez, Chairman of the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

The session of the tripartite Assembly on Wednesday, 7 December 2022, at 9 a.m., will begin with welcome addresses by Speakers of Parliaments made at the Seimas Plenary Chamber.

At 12.15 p.m., the Speakers of the Lithuanian, Polish and Ukrainian Parliaments will take part in a press conference (Press Conference Hall, Building 2 of the Seimas, second floor).
