Speaker of the Seimas congratulates Poland on the Day of the Constitution of 3 May

Press release, 3 May 2023

On behalf of the Seimas and on her own behalf, Viktorija Čmilytė-Nielsen, Speaker of the Seimas, congratulated the Polish National Assembly on the Day of the Constitution of 3 May.

In her congratulation letters to Elżbieta Witek, Marshal of the Sejm, and Tomasz Grodzki, Marshal of the Senate of the Republic of Poland, the Speaker of the Seimas underlined that the Constitution adopted back on 3 May 1791 represented a symbol of progressive thinking of the contemporary Lithuanian and Polish elite and their ambition to preserve and modernise the state and consolidate civil rights.

‘The politicians of the time chose to refrain from standing on the side-lines. Rather, they showed courage in seeking progress for their country and stood up to foreign despotism. I hope that in this challenging period for Europe, the ideals of the Constitution of 3 May will continue to help our two countries work closely together, appreciate the common achievements of our two nations, and further strengthen the friendship and strategic partnership between Lithuania and Poland,’ the congratulation letters read.
