The Assembly of the Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania and the Sejm and Senate of the Republic of Poland was established on 12 June 1997. The objective of the Assembly is to develop and strengthen cooperation between the two countries by discussing matters of mutual interest and issuing joint documents. The Assembly adopts statements, declarations, addresses and resolutions.
The principles and procedure of the Assembly are regulated by the Statute. The Seimas of Lithuania and the bicameral Parliament of Poland each form delegations of 20 parliamentarians based on the principle of proportional representation of political groups in each parliament.
Traditionally, the delegations to the Assembly are headed, respectively, by one of the Deputy Speakers of the Seimas of Lithuania and one of the Deputy Marshals of the Sejm and Senate of Poland.
The Assembly meets in plenary sessions held twice a year alternately in Lithuania and Poland. Each session culminates in the adoption of a document.
The Assembly may, when necessary, set up standing ad hoc commissions.
The working languages of the Assembly are Lithuanian and Polish.
No membership fees are charged.
