Speaker of the Seimas congratulates Iceland on its National Day
Press release, 17 June 2021
On behalf of the Seimas and on her own behalf, Viktorija Čmilytė-Nielsen, Speaker of the Seimas, congratulated Steingrímur Jóhann Sigfússon, Speaker of the Althingi of the Republic of Iceland, and all the people of the country on National Day celebrating the Icelandic independence.
‘On 11 February 2021, we marked the 30th anniversary of the bold step the Republic of Iceland took, thus becoming the first country to recognise the restored independent Republic of Lithuania. In the framework of this anniversary, let me extend the wishes of every success and constructive endeavours to you and the Althingi of the Republic of Iceland, as well as prosperity to your nation,’ says the Speaker of the Seimas in her letter of congratulations.
Ms Čmilytė-Nielsen underlined that Lithuania and Iceland would always be bound by a special relationship lending unique character to the bilateral ties.
‘Taking this opportunity, I would like to express my appreciation of regional cooperation in the Nordic-Baltic format as we, even faced with the Covid-19 pandemic, made every effort to maintain intensive dialogue by remote means. My belief is that in the second half of this year we will be able to resume cooperation between the Speakers of the Nordic and Baltic Parliaments in person, which will give the region a stronger voice on topical matters in a wider multilateral format,’ the congratulatory letter reads.
