The Commitee on European Affairs at work
The Committee on European Affairs accounts for the biggest number of members from among the standing committees of the Seimas and is currently made up of 23 members according to the principle of proportional representation of the Seimas political groups. The political groups delegate their representatives from among Chairs or Deputy Chairs of the Committees, Chairs or Deputy Chairs of the political groups, and political group members responsible for EU matters. The exact number of members in a Committee is approved by a Seimas resolution. Members of the Seimas serving on other committees may also be members of the Committee on European Affairs. Under to the Statute of the Seimas, the Deputy Speaker of the Seimas responsible for EU affairs is appointed Chair of the Committee on European Affairs. The Seimas sets the number of Deputy Chairs of the Committee on European Affairs.
The Committee on European Affairs considers proposals from the European Commission, initiatives from a group of EU Member States and from the European Parliament, as well as other EU strategic documents of legislative planning or policy, in particular the annual work programme of the European Commission; the Annual Growth Survey of the European Commission; draft annual budgets of the EU; the Multiannual Financial Framework; white and green papers; the annual report of the European Court of Auditors; the annual report of the European Police Office (Europol); and the Eurojust Annual Report. The Committee is also engaged in debating draft laws on EU matters falling within the competence of the Seimas and, where necessary, adopts decisions on behalf of the Seimas.
The Committee holds its meetings twice a week, on Wednesdays and Fridays.
