Committee for the Future

About the Committee

The Committee for the Future was set up on 8 December 2020 under the Resolution No XIV-54 of the Seimas “Amending articles 10, 25, 43, 44, 46, 52, 71, 73, 90 and 91 of statute No I-399 of the Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania, supplementing the statute with articles 442, 571, 581 and 731 and repealing article 802 of the statute” the aim of ensuring parliamentary scrutiny of Lithuania’s long-term development policies, including the integration of strategic foresight into the political decision-making process.

The Committee for the Future is the second largest among the standing committees of the Seimas and currently consists of 17 members. Article 442 of the Statute of the Seimas provides that the composition of the Committee for the Future shall be based on the principle of proportional representation of the Seimas political groups. The political groups are suggested to delegate to the Committee their representatives from among Chairs or Deputy Chairs of the Committees, Chairs or Deputy Chairs of the political groups, and political group members responsible for EU matters. Members of the Seimas serving on other committees may also be members of the Committee for the Future. 

According to its mandate, the Committee for the Future considers preparation and implementation of long-term national, European and global strategic policies; development of national futures ecosystem; key reforms and response to challenges of the development of the State and the society. The Committee aspires to broaden international collaboration of the Seimas in areas related to long-term regional and global development prospects.

The Committee holds its meetings once a week on Wednesdays.
