Laima Andrikienė: ‘North Macedonia is an important partner for Lithuania, and our cooperation, including at parliamentary level, must be strengthened’

Press release, 15 January 2021

On 15 January 2021, Dr Laima Andrikienė, Head of the Seimas Group for Inter-Parliamentary Relations with the Western Balkan Countries (Republic of Croatia, Republic of Albania, Republic of North Macedonia, Montenegro, Republic of Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Republic of Kosovo) had a meeting with Monika Zajkova, Chair of the Parliamentary Group of the Assembly of the Republic of North Macedonia for Cooperation with the Parliaments Baltic Countries: Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, for the exchange of views on the most relevant matters, the situation in both countries, and cooperation possibilities.

In Ms Andrikienė’s view, the Republic of North Macedonia has done a great deal in seeking membership of the European Union. She noted that members of the Seimas Group for Inter-Parliamentary Relations with the Western Balkan Countries, working in the fields of culture, foreign and European affairs, and security and defence, have consistently supported North Macedonia’s European integration aspirations and advocated the promotion of cooperation between the two countries.

Ms Zajkova, Member of the Assembly of North Macedonia, emphasised that her country is making significant efforts to implement the necessary reforms. It is expected that a compromise solution will be found on disagreements with the neighbouring Bulgaria. The two countries have not yet adopted a good neighbourly relations agreement. Ms Zajkova expressed her hope that the disagreements with Bulgaria were only temporary and that they would not prevent North Macedonia from joining the EU as the country is rapidly advancing its reform agenda.

The Group leaders agreed to hold a remote meeting between the two Groups at the beginning of February this year.
