Giedrius Surplys, Member of the Seimas, invites to the campaign “Vigil of Democracy. Belarus Alley”

Press release, 19 November 2021

Inspired by the Swedish Monday Meetings that took place in the 1990 to support the Baltic Countries in their freedom struggle, I am organising a campaign “Vigil of Democracy. Belarus Alley” on the 23rd of November.

The event is intended to demonstrate that Lithuanian citizens remain vigilant on democracy in Belarus. I am aiming to spotlight that the main goal of the Belarusian people is new democratic presidential election. Until that happens, the citizens of Belarus face the risk of brutal political persecution and human rights abuses and the European Union will continue facing unpredictable and inhumane hybrid attacks.

Remaining vigilant and in solidarity with the freedom-loving people of Belarus, we shall plant the “Democracy Alley of Belarus” – 16 rowan seedlings (one seedling for each month of stagnation that has already passed since the undemocratic elections of the President took place in Belarus in August 2020) on the 23rd of November on the embankment of the Neris river, on the other shore from the Parliament of the Republic of Lithuania, starting at the Žvėrynas bridge.

The rowan trees will be planted by the heads of various organisations, representatives of the Belarusian opposition and the Lithuanian Belarusian organisations.

The press conference before the event will take place in the Seimas on the 22nd of November, at 11:00 am.

The event will take place on the 23rd of November, from 1:10 p.m. to 1:45 p.m. by the Žvėrynas bridge, on the right embankment of the Neris, on the other side of the Seimas. A famous Lithuanian opera singer Liudas Mikalauskas will sing.

I am kindly inviting you and the members of your community to take part in this peaceful event.
