Press release, 31 May 2022
Laima Liucija Andrikienė, Chair of the Seimas Committee on Foreign Affairs, Giedrius Surplys, Deputy Chair of the Committee, and Emanuelis Zingeris, Member of the Committee, will visit Berlin on 1–3 June 2022 to meet with representatives of the authorities of the Federal Republic of Germany.
‘The end of June will see top-level meetings, namely, the NATO Madrid Summit and the European Council. The political decisions made there may have a significant impact on the future of our region. We expect from the NATO Madrid Summit and the European Council ambitious solutions for reinforcing the defence of NATO’s eastern flank and for taking forward Ukraine’s membership of the EU. We are moving in this direction by using all means of parliamentary diplomacy,’ said Dr Laima Andrikienė before the visit.
The visit programme includes meetings with Michael Roth, Chairman of the Committee on Foreign Affairs of the German Bundestag; Committee members; Tobias Lindner, Minister of State at the Federal Foreign Office of Germany; Dr Franziska Brantner, Parliamentary State Secretary at the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action; other German officials; managers of Zentrum Liberale Moderne; and security and defence experts from Körber-Stiftung.
During the meetings, it is planned to discuss the security of the Baltic Sea Region, Russia’s responsibility for war crimes committed in Ukraine, granting of the EU candidate status to Ukraine, and other relevant foreign policy matters.
