Seimas Committee on Foreign Affairs adopted Statement on violations of International law in Hong Kong

Press release, 8 June 2022

On the occasion of the 33rd anniversary of the Tiananmen Square massacre, in which hundreds to thousands of peaceful pro-democracy activists were killed in Beijing, the Seimas Committee on Foreign Affairs unanimously adopted a statement calling for measures to be taken in response to China’s continuing actions in Hong Kong which violate the principles of human rights and the international rule of law.

According to the initiator of the statement, Marius Matijošaitis, the most recent example of the destruction of Hong Kong’s democracy is the one-person ‘election’ of Hong Kong’s Chief Executive in May this year, in which less than half a percent of the residents took part. ‘Why did Lithuanians draw attention to human rights violations in Hong Kong? Hong Kong seems to be somewhere far away, however we feel empathy because we have experienced first-hand the violence of the totalitarian regime, political repression, and we do not need to be told what a single-candidate election is. It is important to fight for freedom regardless of geographical boundaries, from the Baltic Sea to the South China Sea,’ the Freedom Party Political Group’s representative in the Committee on Foreign Affairs said.

‘Although the attention of the Committee on Foreign Affairs is currently focused on the situation in Ukraine, we remain vigilant in our monitoring of human rights and democracy violations around the world. We call on the People’s Republic of China to release all political prisoners in Hong Kong, and on the European Commission as well as on the governments of Lithuania and other EU Member States to take measures to improve the situation of the people of Hong Kong who are subjected to repressions and persecution,’ Laima Liucija Andrikienė, Chair of the Committee on Foreign Affairs, said.
