The Committee on Foreign Affairs adopted a statement expressing its firm support to Georgia in commemoration of the 14th anniversary of the annexation of a part of its territories

Press release, 8 August 2022

In commemoration of the 14th anniversary of the annexation of a part of the territory of Georgia by the Russian Federation, the Seimas Committee on Foreign Affairs unanimously adopted a statement where it expresses its firm support for the integrity of the state territory of Georgia, as defined in its Constitution, and the inviolability of its internationally recognised borders and considers the occupied regions of Abkhazia and Tskhinvali to be an integral part of the territory of Georgia.

‘Today, as we commemorate Russia’s military aggression against Georgia on 8 August 2008, it must be concluded that the insufficient response by the international community to the aggression perpetrated by Russia in Georgia and the failure to implement the provisions of the Bucharest Memorandum provoked Russia’s further aggression against Ukraine in 2014, and that the impunity for these actions resulted in Russia’s war launched against Ukraine on 24 February 2022 and a large-scale unprovoked war in Europe,’ said Laima Andrikienė, Chair of the Committee on Foreign Affairs.

Stating that the Russian Federation is not only failing to fulfil its obligations under the ceasefire agreement of 12 August 2008, by refusing to withdraw its forces from the occupied territories of Georgia to their pre-conflict positions and by illegally recognising the puppet formations under its support in the occupied part, but is also expanding the scope of its aggression by military means, the Committee’s Statement invites the United Nations, the European Union, NATO and the international community as a whole to step up the pressure on the Russian Federation to comply with its obligations under the ceasefire agreement of 12 August 2008, in particular the ceasefire commitment.

In the Statement, the Committee expresses its confidence in the future of Georgia, as a country that upholds the shared democratic values and respects human rights, in the European Union and the Euro-Atlantic community and welcomes the historic decision of the Council of the European Union on granting Georgia a European perspective. The Committee also calls on the parliaments and governments of the democratic states of the world to continue offering the necessary attention and support to Georgia in order to ensure its territorial integrity and the pursuit of its European and Euro-Atlantic integration objectives.
