Press release, 6 September 2022

Laima Liucija Andrikienė, Chair of the Committee on Foreign Affairs and Head of the Seimas Group for Inter-Parliamentary Relations with the Western Balkan Countries (Republic of Croatia, Republic of Albania, Republic of North Macedonia, Montenegro, Republic of Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Republic of Kosovo), as well as Kęstutis Vilkauskas and Andrius Vyšniauskas, members of the Group, are visiting Pristina, Republic of Kosovo, on 7–9 September 2022, where they are holding meetings with the Kosovan authorities.

‘Lithuania fully and firmly supports Kosovo’s continued efforts to strengthen its statehood, integrate into the international community and build a democratic, multi-ethnic and prosperous state. Lithuania stands by Kosovo’s intention to become a member of the Council of Europe and welcomes its readiness to secure human rights, democracy and the rule of law,’ said the Chair of the Committee on Foreign Affairs.

Ms Andrikienė has no doubt that EU integration is the strongest geopolitical tool to preserve stability and avoid destabilisation in the Western Balkans.

Ms Andrikienė stressed that ‘Lithuania firmly supports Kosovo on its European integration path. We appreciate the progress achieved so far. Lithuania stands ready to continue sharing EU integration experience with Kosovo via EU Twinning projects. Our visit aims to encourage Kosovo to further implement the reforms necessary for EU integration, in particular in the areas of the rule of law, fundamental rights, justice, and fight against corruption and organised crime.’

During the visit, meetings are scheduled with the country’s top leaders, namely Vjosa Osmani-Sadriu, President of the Republic; Glauk Konjufca, Speaker of the Assembly of the Republic of Kosovo; and Besnik Bislimi, First Deputy Prime Minister.

At the Assembly, the Lithuanian parliamentarians will also meet with members of the Kosovo-Lithuania Friendship Group, Committee on European Integration, and Committee on Foreign Affairs and Diaspora, to be followed by a meeting with Donika Gërvalla-Schwarz, Minister of Foreign Affairs.
