On 23 August 2017, a concert dedicated to the European Day of Remembrance for Victims of Stalinism and Nazism, and Day of the Baltic Way took place in the Hall of the Act of 11 March of the Seimas.
In the run-up to the Centenary of the restoration of the state of Lithuania, the musical bridge Baltic Wave was created, for the first time, to unite artists from three continents. Dedicated technology connected musicians from Lithuania, Latvia, Australia, Chicago and Canada for simultaneous performance.
“We could have chosen the easiest way to carry out this project, that is, to record vocal and instrumental parts in advance and combine them into one piece later. However, we went for a more complicated solution, a kind of a challenge. Singing and music sounded in real time, and the time of the music was synchronised with TAI (International Atomic Time) and UTC (Coordinated Universal Time), thus eliminating any time lags. We created a unique programme to serve this purpose,” the project initiator Gediminas Zujus said while talking about the exclusivity of the concert.
The Baltic Orchestra, Lithuanian Chamber Orchestra, Toronto Quartet, singers from Chicago Symphony Orchestra and Melbourne RMIT University, Aidija choir, and United Baltic Military Orchestra performed the pieces by composers Bronius Kutavičius, Pēteris Vasks and Arvo Pärt. The concert was conducted by Modestas Pitrėnas and Māris Kupčs.
The event was broadcast live on the TV channel Seimas Live and streamed on the internet and the Facebook page of the Seimas.
