Speaker of the Seimas congratulates Iceland on its National Day

Press release, 17 June 2024

On behalf of the Seimas and on her own behalf, Viktorija Čmilytė-Nielsen, Speaker of the Seimas, congratulated the Icelandic parliament Althingi on the 80th independence anniversary of Iceland. In her letter of congratulations to Speaker Birgir Ármannsson, she extended the wishes of smooth and harmonious parliamentary work in creating a better life for all the people of Iceland and contributing to the country’s prosperity.

‘Iceland takes a special place in the heart of each Lithuanian, as it was the first country to recognise the restoration of independence of the Republic of Lithuania thirty-three years ago. Recalling and appreciating Iceland’s courage, we feel obliged to make every effort to ensure that international law and human rights and freedoms receive due respect and that every state can build its own future,’ Ms Čmilytė-Nielsen wrote in addition to highlighting her confidence that Iceland and Lithuania would continue their parliamentary cooperation in different formats and defend democratic values.
