On 29 May 2025, Saulius Skvernelis, Speaker of the Seimas, met with Woo Won-shik, Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Korea, and a delegation led by him, who were visiting Lithuania at the invitation of the Speaker of the Seimas.
During the meeting, the Speaker of the Seimas expressed gratitude for the consideration shown to Lithuania and the entire Baltic region, the bilateral political dialogue spanning over three decades as well as for the cooperation in the areas of economy and energy independence.
‘Recognising the significance and the growing need for cooperation between the two countries as well as the expanding volume of bilateral trade, we need to find ways to further enhance our economic exchanges, especially in high value-added sectors. We are ready to develop an active parliamentary partnership between our countries, taking political and economic dialogue to the level of a strategic partnership,’ said the Speaker of the Seimas at the meeting.
According to Mr Skvernelis, there are still many untapped opportunities in the tourism sector as regards the cooperation between Lithuania and Korea, and more focus should be placed on people-to-people, academic, and cultural ties and exchanges.
The topics of security and defence were also high on the agenda of the meeting.
‘Lithuania supports the cooperation between Korea and NATO because it can help to ensure a joint response to threats in the region and combine capabilities in order to maintain the stability in NATO and the Indo-Pacific region,’ Mr Skvernelis said. He also encouraged the Republic of Korea to continue its support for Ukraine and contribute to the Lithuania-initiated Demining Capability Coalition as well as reconstruction projects in Ukraine.
Last year, the Seimas set up the Group for Inter-Parliamentary Relations with the Republic of Korea, comprised of 22 MPs. The Korean-Lithuanian Parliamentary Friendship Group was established in the National Assembly of the Republic of Korea this year.
The Embassy of the Republic of Korea in Lithuania was opened last year. The Lithuanian Embassy in Seoul has been active since 2021.
This has already been the third visit to Lithuania by the leaders of the Korean Parliament since the establishment of diplomatic relations between the Republic of Korea and Lithuania. Previously, the Speakers of the National Assembly visited Lithuania in 2011 and 2019.
