Speaker of the Seimas congratulates the Saeima of the Republic of Latvia on Independence Day

Press release, 18 November 2024

Saulius Skvernelis, Speaker of the Seimas, congratulated the Saeima of the Republic of Latvia on Independence Day on behalf of the Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania and on his own behalf.

‘I would like to extend to the Saeima of the Republic of Latvia the wishes for harmonious and constructive efforts devoted to building the well-being of all Latvians. The independence of the Republic of Latvia declared by the People’s Council of Latvia on 18 November as many as 106 years ago was also an important event for Lithuania. Our states embarked on the path of freedom fight and resistance to the occupation, thus losing many lives, but ultimately winning the desired freedom and independence. We have been cherishing these achievements to this day, becoming increasingly aware of their significance against the backdrop of the current geopolitical challenges,’ the congratulatory letter from the Speaker of the Seimas reads.

Saulius Skvernelis, Speaker of the Seimas, assured the Speaker of the Saeima that, from the start of its work on 14 November 2024, the 14th Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania was looking forward to continuing close parliamentary cooperation between Latvia and Lithuania both in strengthening bilateral ties and in jointly campaigning for democratic values and human rights on the international stage.
