Members of the 14th Seimas took the oath of office and acquired all the rights of a representative of the Nation

On Thursday, 14 November 2024, the Seimas of the 2024–2028 legislative period convened for its inaugural sitting. The work of the new Parliament commenced with welcoming speeches followed by the swearing-in ceremony at the historic Hall of the Act of 11 March.

A total of 137 Members of the Seimas took the oath of office at the first sitting of the 14th Seimas.

Gintaras Goda, President of the Constitutional Court, who administered the oaths, noted that the oath of a Member of the Seimas is not just a formal or symbolic act, nor can it be reduced to merely reading the text of the oath or signing the nominal oath sheet. ‘The act of swearing the oath of a Member of the Seimas is of constitutional legal significance. When taking the oath, the elected Member of the Seimas solemnly and publicly expresses the commitment to act in the manner prescribed by the oath and not to break the oath under any circumstances,’ said the President of the Constitutional Court.

Mr Goda highlighted that ‘the oath of office imposes on a Member of the Seimas the duty to respect and uphold the Constitution and laws and to conscientiously fulfil the duties of a representative of the Nation, as laid down in the Constitution’. 

At the first sitting of the 14th Seimas on 14 November 2024, the following newly elected Members of the Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania took the oath of office and, in accordance with Article 59 of the Constitution of the Republic of Lithuania, acquired all the rights of a representative of the Nation:

The President of the Constitutional Court took note of the information submitted by the Central Electoral Commission that it had received statements by four newly elected Members of the Seimas, namely Vilija Blinkevičiūtė, Gabrielius Landsbergis, Virginijus Sinkevičius, and Aurelijus Veryga, declaring that they would renounce their mandates of a Member of the Seimas and would not be taking the oath of office in accordance with the procedure laid down by laws.
