Lithuanian and Polish MPs adopted a Joint Statement on Ukraine
Press release, 11 March 2022
Today, members of the Seimas Group for Inter-Parliamentary Relations with the Sejm and Senate of the Republic of Poland and members of the Polish-Lithuanian Parliamentary Group of the Sejm of the Republic of Poland have met in Vilnius and adopted a Joint Statement on the events in Ukraine.
The Joint Statement recognises the sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity of Ukraine and inviolability of its internationally recognized borders.
Lithuanian and Polish members of respective Parliaments expressed their unwavering support for granting Ukraine the status of the EU candidate country and its future full-fledged EU membership and invited all the EU Member States to follow suit.
At the same time, the parliamentarians condemned the military aggression by the Russian Federation and Belarus against Ukraine and their objective to overthrow the legitimately elected Ukrainian government, the brutal killing of innocent people, the bombing and shelling of civilian infrastructure targets, rape and pillaging.
The parliamentarians expressed their support for resolute actions taken by the governments and civil society of Poland and Lithuania in providing all possible and necessary humanitarian, military, political, economic, and social assistance to Ukraine as well as all necessary aid to refugees fleeing from the war in Ukraine.
The politicians pledged to make every effort to ensure that international organisations and the entire international community do even more to stop the killing of innocent people immediately and hold the aggressor accountable for his actions.
The Lithuanian and Polish MPs underlined that the current geopolitical situation required the closest possible bilateral relations between Lithuania and Poland, especially in the fields of security and defence, and undertook to maintain constructive and mutually beneficial parliamentary cooperation.
