Speaker of the Seimas congratulated Georgia on Independence Day

Press release, 26 May 2024

On behalf of the Seimas and on her own behalf, Viktorija Čmilytė-Nielsen, Speaker of the Seimas, congratulated the Parliament of Georgia, its President Shalva Papuashvili and the people of the country on Independence Day.

‘Since regaining its independence, Lithuania has consistently supported Georgia’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, and democratic development. We are united with Georgia through historical ordeals in our shared pursuit of freedom for our countries,’ Ms Čmilytė-Nielsen wrote.

At the same time, the Speaker of the Seimas expressed her deep regret at the adoption by the Georgian Parliament of the Law on the Transparency of Foreign Influence and conveyed her support for the people of Georgia who are defending their right to freely express their civic position and are striving to secure the European future of their country.

Ms Čmilytė-Nielsen also noted that this year marks the 30th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Lithuania and Georgia.
