On behalf of the Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania and on her own behalf, Viktorija Čmilytė-Nielsen, Speaker of the Seimas, has congratulated the Folketing of the Kingdom of Denmark and its Speaker, Søren Gade, on the national holiday of Constitution Day. She wished her Danish colleagues – Members of Parliament success and harmony in their endeavours towards the prosperity for all the people of Denmark.

The Speaker of the Seimas noted that the Danish Constitution, promulgated 175 years ago, had established democracy and fundamental human rights and freedoms. Today, we all fully recognise the significance of a constitution as the basis for the national legal order.

‘As we currently witness the core democratic values being trampled upon, we have an obligation to defend the principles of international law and human rights and freedoms. I am therefore happy to see our concerted effort as we work in close cooperation at the parliamentary level. I recall with pleasure my recent official visit to Denmark, which has made a significant contribution to the strengthening of the bilateral parliamentary dialogue,’ the congratulatory letter reads.
