Speakers of the Lithuanian Seimas and other EU Parliaments sent an open letter to the Speaker of the US House of Representatives

Press release, 28 February 2024

Viktorija Čmilytė-Nielsen, Speaker of the Seimas, together with Speakers of Parliaments of 21 European Union Member States has signed an open letter of appeal addressed to Mike Johnson, Speaker of the US House of Representatives. The letter calls on the American counterpart to demonstrate personal leadership as the Congress deliberates on the allocation of US foreign financial assistance to support Ukraine’s ongoing military effort.

‘No more delays. At this critical moment of upheaval in the world order, our actions must be united and swift. Europe is boosting its defence capabilities. However, we understand that taking collective action is the only way to overcome these challenges. Thus, we have called on our counterpart to demonstrate his personal leadership in the hope that the Congress will reach a historic decision regarding the $60.06 billion aid package for Ukraine. Currently, Ukraine requires weapons to achieve both its own victory and ours,’ Ms Čmilytė-Nielsen said.
