Speaker of the Seimas: ‘Seimas resolutions on Ukraine have become real actions and examples for other states’

Press release, 14 March 2024

The Parliament has approved the Resolution on Comprehensive Support for Ukraine’s Victory initiated by Ms Viktoria Čmilytė-Nielsen, Speaker of the Seimas. The Resolution expresses the political will of the Seimas as the representatives of the Nation and reiterates or updates previously adopted positions on important issues. New positions include the unlawful and forcible transfer of Ukrainian children to Russia and Belarus, as well as the holding this Sunday, on 17 March, of so-called presidential elections in Russia, which will, inter alia, seek to legalise the temporarily and illegally occupied and annexed territories of Ukraine.

‘There are also other issues on which it is important to express or reiterate the political will of the Seimas. The resolutions that we have adopted have become not only real decisions of Lithuania, but also an example for other countries. Today, we also call on the international community to urgently and substantially increase political, economic, financial, military, technical and humanitarian aid to Ukraine; to find the will in Washington to invite Ukraine to join NATO and, ultimately, to start negotiations on EU membership and to establish the Special International Criminal Tribunal,’ the Speaker of the Parliament said. ‘Concrete results are needed right now, because not only every day of unstopped aggression is adding to Ukraine’s losses, but also delays are helping Russia.

According to Ms Čmilytė-Nielsen, Speaker of the Seimas, since the beginning of Russia’s illegal, unprovoked and unjustified invasion of Ukraine, which is supported by Belarus and in which Belarus participates, the Seimas has been unequivocal in its support for Ukraine.

‘Through its resolutions and initiatives, the Seimas has often been at the forefront of international political processes. Moreover, the leadership of the Seimas and Lithuania has also been recognised by Volodymyr Zelenskyy, President of Ukraine, who spoke in this chamber,’ Ms Čmilytė-Nielsen says. ‘I would like to point out that these resolutions have been unanimously supported by the Members of the Seimas, and this will undoubtedly be a striking legacy of this parliamentary term.’
