Saulius Skvernelis, Speaker of the Seimas, met with Emil Druc, Ambassador of Moldova. They discussed further development of bilateral relations and Lithuania’s support for Moldova’s European integration and the strengthening of security and democracy.
‘Moldova was among the first countries to recognise Lithuania’s independence. It was a bold step at the time. Now, it is our goal to help Moldova join the EU as quickly and as smoothly as possible and to obtain security guarantees. We know what challenges and pressures come from Russia as a result of energy dependence and the upcoming parliamentary elections in Moldova; therefore, we are willing to lend you a helping hand. Not so long ago, we had to grapple with energy blackmail, but now we can share best practices of freeing ourselves from energy dependence. We also stand ready to cooperate by assisting your country in efficiently navigating the procedures of EU accession, understanding the advantages of EU membership, and ensuring a seamless integration process,’ Mr Skvernelis said at the meeting.
In December 2023, the European Council decided to open accession negotiations with Moldova.
Lithuania is currently aiding Moldova with the establishment of a crisis management centre and implementing a project for helping Moldova to create a technologically advanced inter-institutional system for the analysis of information incidents and response.
The Seimas has set up the Group for Inter-Parliamentary Relations with the Republic of Moldova, which is expected to further develop bilateral ties and ensure close inter-parliamentary cooperation.
