Petras Auštrevičius, Deputy Chair of the Seimas Committee on European Affairs, proposed, with the assent of the Committee, the establishment of a European Club in the Seimas in 2005.
The first meeting of the Seimas European Club took place on 15 April 2005. The inaugural meeting of the Seimas European Club adopted the rules of procedure and discussed future activities. Petras Auštrevičius, the author of the idea and Deputy Chair of the Seimas Committee on European Affairs, was elected President of the Seimas European Club. Juozas Olekas, MP, was approved for the post of Vice-President of the Club.
During its meetings, the Club addresses current issues related to Lithuania’s membership of the European Union and takes interest in EU’s history and development. Famous historians and experts on culture, European integration, political science and international relations from Lithuania and other EU member states are invited to make presentations at the meetings of the Club.
Currently, the Seimas European Club comprises 28 members.
The meetings of the Club are open to the public.
