Viktoras Pranckietis, Speaker of the Seimas, discussed bilateral and regional cooperation and national security issues with Latvian leaders

The delegation headed by Viktoras Pranckietis, Speaker of the Seimas, met with the leaders of Latvia in Riga, where they discussed the preparation of Lithuania and Latvia for the Centenary celebration of the states to be held in 2018, security of the region, the Eastern Partnership, and nuclear safety issues.

 

“At the meeting with Latvian leaders, we discussed the issues that are most relevant to our countries. The ways to ensure full security of our region and resilience of critical infrastructure to potential challenges were at the focus of our attention,” said the Speaker of the Seimas.

 

Bilateral relations between Lithuania and Latvia, joint infrastructure projects and harnessing the potential of the Klaipėda LNG terminal were at the top of the agenda of the meeting with Raimonds Vējonis, President of the Republic of Latvia. Particular attention was given to the Eastern Partnership and the situation in Ukraine.

 

 

The meeting between Viktoras Pranckietis and Ināra Mūrniece, Speaker of the Saeima, focused on strengthening the inter-parliamentary cooperation, activities of the Baltic Assembly and deepening of regional integration. The Speakers of the Lithuanian and Latvian Parliaments also discussed the issues of strengthening security of the Baltic States, the situation in Ukraine and readiness to address hybrid threats.

 

It was stressed during the meetings that creating single electricity and gas markets of the Baltic States is important in strengthening energy security of the Baltic States. The positive role of the Klaipėda LNG terminal in the Baltic region and the importance of strategic infrastructure projects such as Rail Baltica in deepening the integration of the Baltic and Central European countries was noted.

 

 

At the meeting with Māris Kučinskis, Prime Minister of Latvia, bilateral economic relations and the significance of regional infrastructure projects were discussed.

 

At the end of the working visit to Latvia, the Speaker of the Seimas and the delegation visited the Lithuanian Embassy.
