Speaker of the Seimas: Lithuania strongly supports reforms in Georgia and will assist in their implementation

Viktoras Pranckietis, Speaker of the Seimas, met with Giorgi Margvelashvili, President of Georgia, who came to Lithuania on an official visit to mark the launch of the EU visa-free regime for Georgian citizens and to thank Lithuanian people for their support.

‘The President and I talked about Georgia’s progress towards European integration,’ the Speaker of the Seimas said. Mr Pranckietis noted that Lithuania consistently supported Georgia’s sovereignty and its territorial integrity.

The Speaker of the Seimas paid a working visit to Georgia on 19–20 March 2017 within the framework of a meeting of Speakers of NB8 Parliaments to discuss matters pertaining to the region and the EU, Brexit, migration, shared threats and the future of the EU.

Since 2004, Lithuania has implemented over 170 development cooperation projects in the areas of stronger civil society and regional development. Lithuania is part of the EU Monitoring Mission in Georgia and leads the NATO Trust Fund which aims at clearing the territory of Georgia of mines. Lithuania provided funding for over 100 Georgian military officers to study in Lithuania. Georgia is Lithuania’s close partner.
