Heads of the Lithuanian, Latvian and Polish parliaments addressed European parliaments on the issue of Nord Stream 2
Press release, 11 March 2018
The heads of the Latvian and Polish parliaments, who had gathered to a solemn commemoration of the Day of the Re-establishment of Lithuania’s Independence in the Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania, and Viktoras Pranckietis, Speaker of the Seimas, signed an Open Letter to Presidents of Parliaments of European States thereby drawing the attention of European countries to the fundamental principles of the Energy Union for Europe and the political context of the Nord Stream 2 pipeline.
“Although it is presented as a commercial project, it is undoubtedly a political instrument, which will increase the dependence of the European Union on Russia as a single energy supplier. We are convinced that Nord Stream 2 is also a geopolitical project based on Russia’s political decision to cut gas transit through Ukraine and divert the flows through the Nord Stream 2 pipeline,” the Speaker of the Seimas said.

The Open Letter by Viktoras Pranckietis, Speaker of the Seimas; Ināra Mūrniece, Speaker of the Saeima of the Republic of Latvia; and Marek Kuchciński, Marshal of the Sejm of the Republic of Poland, calls on European parliaments to engage more actively in a dialogue, which is based on transparency and mutual trust, and which will lay the foundations for preserving a transparent Energy Union in the whole continent. The Presidents of Parliaments invited heads of other European parliaments to join this Open Letter.
The Presidents of Parliaments also stress that the future of energy in Europe lies in preserving clean and climate-friendly energy sources for future generations.
